World Junior Hockey

Once again, the best under-20 players from around the globe will convene to determine which nation has the best crop of juniors. This time the setting is the in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta as host venues for the latest edition of the tournament.

The Canada will be looking to use home-ice advantage to propel themselves onto the podium for the first time since 2005, when they finished third behind champion Canada and silver medallist Russia. It’s been even longer since the Canada claimed gold in this competition, with back-to-back first-place finishes in 2000 and 2001 the last (and only) times the nation has topped the podium.

As usual, the likes of Canada, the United States and Russia will be considered among the favourites, although Finland will be eager to defend its title after a stunning run through the competition last year.

World Juniors 2021: Roster, dates, format for Hockey Canada’s selection camp

As the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship approaches, Hockey Canada announced the players invited to attend the National Junior Team Sport Chek Selection Camp beginning Nov. 16.

“Although this has been a difficult year for our athletes and staff, we are excited to unveil the 46 players who will compete for a spot on Canada’s National Junior Team at the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship,” Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada’s senior vice president of national teams, said in a news release.

“We know our athletes are excited for the opportunity to defend gold on home ice this year, and we expect a highly competitive selection camp with a number of difficult decisions to be made when it comes time to select the players who will wear the Maple Leaf in Edmonton in December.”

The 2021 edition returns to Canadian soil as Edmonton, Alberta, will serve as the host. Red Deer, Alberta, was originally scheduled to split hosting duties; however, because of the ongoing pandemic, the tournament will now be held in an NHL-style bubble in Edmonton. While the country enters with a world-best 18 gold medals, it did not win any the last time the tournament was held in its confines in 2019 (Vancouver and Victoria, B.C.).

Here’s everything to know about the selection camp and upcoming 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Who was invited to Canada’s 2021 World Juniors selection camp?

A total of 46 players were initially invited to Team Canada’s selection camp, which will be held from Nov. 16 to Dec. 13 in Red Deer, Alberta. The players, including five goaltenders, 15 defensemen and 26 forwards, will compete for a spot on head coach Andre Tourigny’s team.

Last year, Flames prospect Jakob Pelletier was expected to play for Canada but was injured prior to camp. Seven players who were cut from that 2020 camp will get a chance to wear the Maple Leafs in Edmonton: Thomas Harley, Dylan Holloway, Peyton Krebs, Alex Newhook, Cole Perfetti, Braden Schneider and Connor Zary.

2021 World Junior Championship schedule released

The United States will play Russia on Dec. 25, one of three games scheduled for the first day of the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship.

The tournament, which runs through Jan. 5, 2021, will be held at Rogers Place in Edmonton, without fans in attendance, in a secure-zone bubble similar to what the NHL used for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The event had been scheduled for Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta.

The U.S. and Russia are in Group B for the preliminary round, along with Sweden, Austria and the Czech Republic. After opening against Russia (9:30 p.m. ET), the U.S. will play Austria on Dec. 26 (9:30 p.m. ET), the Czech Republic on Dec. 29 (2 p.m. ET), and Sweden on Dec. 31 (9:30 p.m. ET).

The U.S. finished sixth at the 2020 WJC in the Czech Republic.

Canada, the 2020 tournament winner, is in Group A, along with Finland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany.

Canada plays its first game of the tournament against Germany on Dec. 26 (6 p.m. ET). It then plays Slovakia on Dec. 27 (6 p.m. ET), Switzerland on Dec. 29 (6 p.m. ET), and Finland on Dec. 31 (6 p.m. ET).

The top four teams in each group will play in the quarterfinals Jan. 2. The semifinals are Jan. 4, and the championship and third-place games are Jan. 5. Since the IIHF announced the cancelation of five lower-level under-20 tournaments, there will be no relegation or promotion from the 2021 WJC.

“A tremendous amount of planning has been underway for almost two years and announcing the schedule signifies how close we are to puck drop,” said Riley Wiwchar, executive director of the 2021 WJC organizing committee. “After announcing the return of the tournament last month, there is a feeling, even knowing there won’t be fans in the building, of excitement and anticipation across the province and extending across the country as fans get set to cheer on the future stars of the game.”
